Nigeria: laity exhorted to greater involvement in politics
March 31, 2015
Lamenting “a certain spirit of blameworthy, culpable lethargy,” a Nigerian prelate called upon Catholic laity to take a greater role in the nation’s political life.
“The Church sees politics as a potent and strong force that when employed positively can advance the common good in no small manner,” Bishop Joseph Bagobiri of Kafanchan said in an address to leaders of the Catholic Laity Council of Nigeria.
Politics, he added, “can make provision for food, water, shelter, health care, provision of compassionate welfare packages for the needy and indigent in society much better and in a larger and more expansive manner than could be done by spirited individuals and organizations.”
The nation of 175 million, Africa’s most populous, is 50% Muslim, 25% Protestant, and 16% Catholic.
