Scottish archbishop urges faithful to maintain hope despite dramatic parish closings

Archbishop Leo Cushley of Edinburgh has said that a radical downsizing of the Scottish archdiocese should “enable us to intensify our spiritual and evangelical activity.”
The number of parishes in the Edinburgh archdiocese will be slashed from 100 to 30 in the reorganization plan. The parish closings come at a time when the archdiocese is already reeling after the previous archbishop, Cardinal Keith O’Brien, resigned in disgrace in a homosexual scandal.
Archbishop Cushley urged the faithful to keep the reorganization in perspective. He said: “Like the Church of the first few centuries, we are called to be poorer but purer, to cope with fewer material resources but at the same time increase our spiritual resources.” “So whilst this is a time of sober realism, we must not submit to pessimism,” the archbishop said.
