India: former nun settles claim against religious community

March 30, 2015

In India, a former nun, who claims that she was hounded out of her religious community after reporting sexual abuse, has won a financial settlement from the religious congregation.

The Sisters of St. Agatha have agreed to pay 1.2 million rupees ($191,000) to the woman, who has been identified only as Anitha, to aid her transition to secular life. The financial settlement was mediated by the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church.

Anitha had threatened a sit-in outside the convent in the town of Kochi where she once lived, demanding to be restored to the religious community. As part of the settlement she had dropped that demand and agreed that, after 20 years in religious life, she will no longer present herself as a sister.
