More than 500,000 people have signed an online petition calling for the release of Asia Bibi, the Pakistani Christian woman who has been sentenced to death on a questionable blasphemy charge.
The petition, begun by a British university student and originally addressed to Prime Minister David Cameron, has drawn international support for the cause of the young Pakistani mother, whose controversial conviction was upheld last year by an appeals court.
Asia Bibi has been imprisoned since 2010, when she was charged with blasphemy against Islam by fellow workers with whom she had a dispute. Human-rights workers have called for her release, while Muslim militants have demanded her execution.
