Cardinal Nichols instructs priests to avoid public debate on Synod issues

March 25, 2015

Cardinal Vincent Nichols of Westminster has advised English priests not to engage in a public debate on controversial issues that will be discussed at the October meeting of the Synod of Bishops.

Reacting to a public statement signed by 461 priests of England and Wales, calling for a clear statement of support for traditional Catholic teaching on marriage, the cardinal said that discussion of such issues “is not best conducted through the press.” “Every priest in England and Wales has been asked to reflect on the Synod discussion,” Cardinal Nichols said. However, he continued, “channels of communication have been established” to allow priests to convey their ideas to their bishops.

This raises the question, since when and for what reasons should anything in the well-established Catholic teachings on marriage and family become "controversial"?
