Cardinal Nichols presides at Requiem Mass before re-interment of England's King Richard III

March 24, 2015

Cardinal Vincent Nichols of Westminster presided at a Requiem Mass for England’s King Richard III on March 23, as Anglican authorities prepared to re-inter the king’s remains.

King Richard III was killed in 1485. Last year, DNA tests confirmed that a skeleton discovered during the excavation of a parking garage in Leicester was that of the English king. His remains have been brought to Leicester Cathedral, where they will be buried on March 26.

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. Justin Welby, will preside at the burial ceremony. Although Richard III was a Catholic, Cardinal Nichols remarked that Catholics and Anglicans have worked together in planning for his re-interment, and “cooperation between our churches and the preparation of these events has been first-class.”

If King Richard III has been in Purgatory all these years, may this funeral Mass be all that was needed to send his soul to heaven. May he rest in peace.
