Boston archdiocese goes to court to end occupation of closed parish church

March 20, 2015

The Archdiocese of Boston is seeking a court injunction to end the occupation of a parish church that was officially closed more than a decade ago.

The “Friends of St. Frances Cabrini,” who have maintained a steady presence in the church building in Scituate, Massachusetts, were summoned to appear in court on March 20. The group says that it will “take advantage of every legal avenue” to continue their vigil.

The dissident group, which holds its own prayer services every Sunday, has fought against the 2004 decision by the archdiocese to close the parish. But the Vatican has rejected the group’s canonical petitions.

This is a dissident group that is holding their own lay led priest-less services at the former parish church instead of attending Mass at the nearby active Catholic parish. They have fallen away from the practice of their Catholic faith. The civil authorities HAVE to be enlisted to help when a group basically attempts to leave the Church and take Catholic parish buildings with them. The diocese cannot storm the former parish buildings to take it back from the people occupying them.

I wonder, is this what Christ would have done to settle a church dispute?
