Latin American bishops rue effects of mining by multinational coroporations

Testifying before a hearing of a regional human rights body, representatives of the Latin American Episcopal Conference (CELAM) called upon the US and Canada to hold multinational mining companies responsible for damage to indigenous peoples, the environment, and local economies.
Bishop Oscar Cantú, the chairman of the US bishops’ Committee on International Justice and Peace, expressed support for the Latin American bishops’ concerns.
