A proposal to speed the process of legal divorce has won overwhelming approval in the Italian Senate.
By a vote of 228 to 11, lawmakers passed the “fast-divorce” bill, which would reduce the required period of separation before a divorce can become final. The current period, in a case in which both spouses agree and no children are involved, is three years; the new mark would be six months.
The Senate voted down a proposal to eliminate the mandatory period of separation and allow immediate divorce in uncontested cases.
The “fast-divorce” bill now returns to the lower house of the Italian parliament for final approval.
