Having sold mansion he built, Atlanta's Archbishop Gregory completes move to more modest residence

March 12, 2015

Archbishop Wilton Gregory of Atlanta, Georgia, has moved into new residence in suburban Smyrna, after selling a mansion that he had built at a cost of over $2 million.

“It was a strategic mistake that perhaps I should have seen in advance,” the archbishop said of the mansion, which he sold last November at a price of $2.6 million. He had come under fire for moving into the costly residence at a time when Pope Francis was encouraging Church leaders to adopt a frugal way of life.

Archbishop Gregory said that the profit from the sale of his home would be used to providing support for parishes that are having trouble meeting their own needs.
