Italian bishop protests trend to censor Christianity

March 09, 2015

The secretary-general of the Italian bishops’ conference has decried “an insane desire to deny cultural relevance to religious facts, especially if they pertain to Christianity and Catholicism in particular.”

“There is an ongoing attempt to marginalize all religious Christian and Catholic manifestations!” Bishop Nunzio Galantino said in an interview with Il Giornale.

Speaking about protests against a plan to have priests bless schools at Easter time, the bishop said that some public figures feel “the need to censor extracurricular activities when they concern a religious dimension, especially if Christian or Catholic.” He said that “respect for minorities is becoming just a hypocritical and aggressive way to establish the dictatorship of minorities.”

Bishop Galantino also made headlines with a homily in which he complained that “Italy is a country led by the lobbies.” He argued that special interests have control over government policies. “Politics supports and fattens those who are already fat enough," he said.

The bishop said that Italy is in dire need of more responsible political leadership. “Young people are increasingly lost and short of hope, families struggling with the risk of not making it. A culture flattened by partisan interests.”
