Pope pays tribute to women

March 09, 2015

Following his Angelus address on March 8, which is commemorated in some places as International Women’s Day, Pope Francis prayed for women and offered “a fraternal ‘thank you’ for all those women who, in a thousand ways, bear witness to the Gospel and work in the Church.”

“A world where women are marginalized is a sterile world, because women don’t just bear life but transmit to us the ability to see otherwise, they see things differently,” he said. “They transmit to us the ability to understand the world with different eyes, to understand things with hearts that are more creative, more patient, more tender.”

I remember my first conversation with a committed feminist and epistemological relativist when I was a freshman in college. I was always struck by the profound philosophical skepticism that came from the idea that one's place in space, gender, or orientation, gave one a unique understanding of reality. This is a recipe for real trouble and has been fuel for the organizers of identity politics. Unfortunately, Francis reinforces this mistake, in his sincere support for mothers.
