Holy See, Italy in talks on tax evasion

March 06, 2015

Speaking on Italian efforts to combat tax evasion, Prime Minister Matteo Renzi said that he hoped to “recover a little bit of money also from the Vatican”—prompting a statement from the director of the Holy See Press Office.

The Holy See and Italy are discussing ways to “go towards the goal of greater and more complete transparency and exchange of information for tax purposes,” said Father Federico Lombardi.

Vatican officials told the ANSA news agency that the talks do not directly involve Vatican accounts. Rather, Italian officials are looking for cooperation from the Vatican in their efforts to identify individuals who are attempting to avoid taxes by transferring funds to Italian religious orders.
