Council of Europe directs France to legislate against spanking

The Council of Europe has announced that France must enact new legislation against spanking.

The Council said that French law, which affirms the right of parents to discipline their children is "not sufficiently clear, binding, and specific." The March 4 ruling directed France to adopt a law that would affirm the state's obligation, under the European Social Charter, to protect children.
