Wisconsin diocese raising funds to handle spike in number of seminarians

The Diocese of Madison, Wisconsin, has launched a fundraising campaign to cope with a welcome problem: a huge increase in the number of young men preparing for the priesthood.

The diocese has begun a $30 million capital campaign, designed to raise fund to defray the cost of seminary training. Church officials report that they have already received pledges of $28 million.

The number of seminarians in the Madison diocese has leapt from 6 to 33 since 2003, when Bishop Robert Morlino was installed. “I couldn’t be more pleased,” he said, regarding the surge. The bishop credited the priests of the diocese for enthusiastically backing an effort to encourage candidates for the priesthood.
