Asian Catholics dispensed from fasting as Ash Wednesday clashes with Lunar New Year

February 18, 2015

Many Asian Catholics have been dispensed from the rules of fasting and abstinence on Ash Wednesday this year, because the Lunar New Year falls on the same date.

Many Asian dioceses have announced the dispensation, as February 18 brings in the Year of the Goat. The imposition of ashes still took place on Ash Wednesday, but the Chinese faithful were directed to fast on another day.

In Vancouver, Archbishop Michael Miller said that members of the Canadian city’s large Asian community were dispensed from fasting for Ash Wednesday.
