Cardinal Becker dead at 86

Cardinal Karl Becker, a German Jesuit theologian, has died at the age of 86.

Born in 1928, he joined the Society of Jesus in 1948 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1958.

A professor at the Pontifical Gregorian University for 34 years, Father Becker played a part in dialogues with the Lutheran World Federation (1997-99) and the Society of St. Pius X (2009-11). Pope Benedict XVI paid tribute to his work as a theologian by naming him a cardinal in 2012.

In his telegram of condolence, Pope Francis expressed “deep gratitude” fo Cardinal Becker’s “intense and exemplary service” to the Church.
