Pope Francis to address Congress in joint session in September
February 05, 2015
Pope Francis will address a joint session of the US Congress on September 24.
Speaker of the House John Boehner announced the papal appearance on February, noting that Pope Francis "will become the first leader of the Holy See to address a joint meeting of Congress.'
“In a time of global upheaval, the Holy Father’s message of compassion and human dignity has moved people of all faiths and backgrounds," the Speaker said. He said the address would be a "historic occasion."
The Vatican confirmed in January that Pope Francis would visit Washington, DC, as well as New York, during a September trip to the US. The trip had originally been scheduled to allow the Pontiff to participate in the World Meeting of Families, which will be held in September.
