Russian Patriarch calls for abortion ban in first-ever address to Duma

January 26, 2015

Russian Orthodox Patriarch Kirill suggested a nationwide campaign against legal abortion, as he addressed Russia’s legislative body, the Duma.

The Patriarch’s speech was the first ever delivered to the Duma by a leader of the Orthodox Church.

Patriarch Kirill suggested that as a first step, the government should stop subsidizing abortion. “Taxpayers must not pay for this,” he said.

The Russian prelate also urged lawmakers to consider legal restrictions on surrogate parenthood.
