Vatican denies reports of terrorism warning

January 12, 2015

A spokesman for the Holy See has denied media reports that the Vatican has been identified as the next likely target for terrorist attacks.

Father Federico Lombardi, the director of the Vatican press office, issued a statement on January 12 saying that “the Holy See has not been informed of specific risks by the security services of other countries.” The statement went on to say that Vatican officials maintain a “reasonable level of attention and prudence,” but there is “no reason to arouse concerns” that would needlessly worry Vatican workers or visitors.

The statement was issued as Pope Francis prepared for a trip to Sri Lanka and Philippines later in the day.

On January 11, an Israeli state television broadcast had claimed that US intelligence agencies had warned the Vatican about the likelihood of an impending attack.
