First Things editor rejects blogger's attack on Pope Francis

January 09, 2015

The editor of First Things has distanced himself from the views expressed in a blog post by a contributor to the magazine’s web site.

R.R. Reno issued a statement responding to criticism roused by a blog post written by Maureen Mullarkey, harshly criticizing the forthcoming encyclical by Pope Francis on the environment. Reno explained that First Things does not necessarily endorse all of the views of contributing bloggers. “But in this instance I strongly disagree with Maureen’s assessment of Pope Francis.”

“Most of all I don’t like the dismissive, cutting tone of Maureen’s criticisms,” Reno said. Mullarkey, in her piece, had referred to the Pontiff as “an ideologue and a meddlesome egoist.”

Cdl Ratzinger on Bavarian TV in 1997, speaking of the Holy Spirit's intervention in relation to the election of a Pope, "Probably the only assurance he offers is that the thing (the Papacy) cannot be totally ruined." I thought Mullarkey spoke common sense, though it appears to be not as common as I thought. There is no reason to kowtow to every idea that the Pope has unrelated to his teaching authority, and I will respectfully read his opinions on scientific questions.
