Cardinal Marx warns against threats to human life

January 06, 2015

In his New Year’s Eve homily, Cardinal Reinhard Marx of Munich, president of the German bishops’ conference, warned against threats to human life.

Stating that “one cannot buy life” and that “life is not our product,” the Munich archbishop spoke against surrogacy. The family, “in the man and woman … open to the gift of life,” is “the primary community for the future of our society,” he added.

Referring to life as a “precious gift,” the prelate warned against suicide for the terminally ill and disabled and spoke out in favor of palliative care. He also called for solidarity for “the poor, the weak, the refugees, the unemployed.”

According to Catholic World News a few weeks ago, Cardinal Marx "said that the (German) bishops favor allowing divorced and remarried Catholics to share in the Eucharist." If 2,000 years of Catholic teaching can be ignored in the doctrine that governs reception of the Eucharist, why can't Cardinal Marx also ignore Church teaching with regard to matters like surrogacy and suicide. You ask yourself: when a Cardinal, or anyone, decides to start ignoring the Magisterium, where do they stop?
