Cardinal George ends experimental treatment; drug fails to stop cancer

December 31, 2014

Cardinal Francis George, who recently retired as Archbishop of Chicago, has stopped using an experimental cancer drug after doctors found that the treatment had been ineffective.

Cardinal George retired in November, after revealing that he was battling cancer for the 2nd time. The cardinal has said that he expects the cancer to cause his death eventually. But a spokesman for the Chicago archdiocese said that to date, the disease has not spread to any vital organs.

Cardinal George participated in experimental trials of the new drug voluntarily. Doctors at the University of Chicago said although the cardinal was not helped, results of the trials could help other cancer patients.
