Papal condolences following death of Archbishop Pittau

December 29, 2014

Archbishop Giuseppe Pittau, a Jesuit who served as secretary of the Congregation for Catholic Education from 1998 to 2003, died on December 26 at the age of 86.

From 1981 to 1983, at the request of St. John Paul II, Archbishop Pittau assisted Cardinal Paolo Dezza in governing the Society of Jesus; he had previously served as rector of Sophia University and Jesuit provincial in Japan.

In the years prior to his work as secretary of the Congregation for Catholic Education, Archbishop Pittau served as rector of the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome and chancellor of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences and the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences.

In his telegram of condolence, Pope Francis described Archbishop Pittau as an “exemplary minister of God who lived for the cause of the Gospel.”
