Hindu groups allied with the India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party have conducted several recent ceremonies in which groups of Christians and Muslims have converted to Hinduism.
The Associated Press reported that amid allegations of forced conversions to Hinduism, opposition-party lawmakers demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi speak out on the issue, prompting shouting matches that led to repeated adjournments of Parliament.
“The prime minister's silence has been deafening,” said Dominic Emmanuel, a spokesman for the Archdiocese of New Delhi. “If Modi does not speak up now, the situation is going to slip out of his hands.”
