Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York and Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio of Brooklyn lamented the murder of two New York Police Department officers in Brooklyn. “We mourn the brutal and irrational execution of two young, promising and devoted police officers, Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu, as we tear up thinking about their heartbroken families, as we are in solidarity with our police officers who experience a ‘death in the family,’ as we worry about a city tempted to tension and division,” Cardinal Timothy Dolan said during his December 21 homily in St. Patrick’s Cathedral. After praying for the repose of the officers’ souls and the consolation of their families, Bishop DiMarzio said in a statement that “each day, 35,000 of our fellow citizens put on blue uniforms and patrol the streets of our city to keep us safe. Each deserves our prayers and gratitude. These finest of men and women will undoubtedly continue to patrol and keep us safe by the strength of their service … Saint Michael the Archangel, patron of our police officers, pray for us.”
