Cuban, Miami prelates react to policy change toward Cuba
December 19, 2014
The bishops of Cuba have issued a statement welcoming the announcement of the US policy change toward Cuba.
“We thank the Lord, now on the eve of Christmas, that new horizons of hope are illumining the life of the Cuban people, as the relaxation and good relations between peoples that are so close are the foundation of a promising future,” stated Cuba’s bishops, according to a Zenit report.
Archbishop Thomas Wenski of Miami, home of a large Cuban-American community, said that “Pope Francis did what popes are supposed to do: build bridges and promote peace.”
“The Church in Cuba has always opposed the embargo, arguing that it was a blunt instrument that hurt the innocent more than the guilty; and the US Church has supported the Catholic Church in Cuba,” he added. “We have consistently advocated that the US should revise this policy, in the hope that engagement and dialog would prove more helpful in improving conditions in Cuba than a policy of confrontation and isolation.”
