Pope celebrates 78th birthday

December 17, 2014

Pope Francis celebrated his 78th birthday on December 17 with a cake, a cup of the traditional Argentine maté tea, and impromptu tango dancing by couples in St. Peter’s Square.

During his regular Wednesday public audience the Pope was serenaded by the crowd in St. Peter’s Square. A group of seminarians presented him with a large birthday cake—challenging him to blow out the candles—while others offered maté. A number of couples performed the tango, responding to a statement that the Pontiff made shortly after his election, when he said that the rhythms of the tango have a special resonance in his heart.
