After canonizations, dozens of pilgrims from India remain in Rome, probably seeking work

December 05, 2014

At least 60 pilgrims from India who traveled to Rome for the November 23 canonization of two Indian saints have not returned home and are believed to be seeking employment in Italy.

Nearly 10,000 people traveled from India for the canonization of Sts. Kuriakose Elias Chavara and Euphrasia Eluvathingal. Most of them traveled on 10-day visitors’ visas, which expired on November 30. Those who remain in Italy are likely planning to join other undocumented immigrants in looking for work.

Travel agencies initially reported that up to 100 people had not returned to India after the canonizations. That number has declined as the agencies have contacted travelers and their families, but dozens of pilgrims remain unaccounted for.
