Minnesota archdiocese weighs bankruptcy option

November 21, 2014

The Archdiocese of St. Paul-Minneapolis, Minnesota, is considering the possibility of filing for bankruptcy protection, in the wake of a costly financial settlement with sex-abuse victims.

Earlier this month the archdiocese announced plans for a 20% cut in its operating budget, which would require layoffs from the chancery staff and a sharp decrease in services to parishes. Archdiocesan officials are now weighing their options for handling payments to abuse victims.

To date 11 Catholic dioceses and archdioceses in the US have entered bankruptcy since the explosion of the sex-abuse scandal.
