Pope decries 'price lists' for parish services

November 21, 2014

“Churches must never become businesses,” Pope Francis said in a homily at morning Mass on November 21.

Commenting on the Gospel passage in which Jesus clears the Temple of money-changers, the Pope lamented: “How often, when we enter a church, do we see… a price list hanging there for baptisms, blessings, Mass intentions.”

Such lists, the Pope said, lead to “the scandal of worldliness.” He said that pastors should never take a money-oriented approach. “Because redemption is free; it is God’s free gift.”
