The Diocese of Helena, Montana, has filed a reorganization plan in federal bankruptcy court, proposing a $16.4 million payment to victims of sexual abuse.
The reorganization plan, which is the result of mediated talks with abuse victims, must still be approved by the court. The plan would settle claims brought by 362 people in lawsuits involving sexual abuse.
The Helena diocese is the 11th Catholic diocese in the US to seek bankruptcy protection because of the costs of sex-abuse settlements.
