Prelate warns that Syria could turn into another Libya

November 18, 2014

An archbishop in northeastern Syria has warned of the disastrous consequences of potential airstrikes by the United States against Syrian government forces.

Archbishop Jacques Behnan Hindo, who governs the Syriac-rite Archeparchy of Hassaké-Nisibi, said that “if the US-led intervention against the jihadists of the Islamic State eventually turns against the Syrian army, we could have a second Libya in Syria.”

In 2011, a NATO intervention in Libya helped lead to the overthrow of strongman Muammar Gaddafi; the nation is now beset by civil war with several belligerents, some of which are radically Islamist.
