Vatican will offer showers for Rome's homeless

November 13, 2014

The Vatican is setting up shower stalls to serve the homeless of Rome.

Archbishop Konrad Krajewski, who as papal almoner has been directed by Pope Francis to provide help for Rome’s homeless, has asked the Vatican city-state to include showers in the plans for remodeling public bathrooms just off St. Peter’s Square.

Although there are a few institutions in Rome that offer showers for the homeless, their facilities are limited and can accommodate only a few people each day. Archbishop Krajewski observed that it is easier to provide food for the poor than to offer showers, since the latter service requires hot water, towels, and attendants. But he hopes to augment the new service by recruiting barbers and hairdressers for the homeless as well.
