Vatican to host major conference on traditional marriage

November 03, 2014

The Vatican will host a 3-day conference on traditional marriage later this month, with Pope Francis scheduled to address the opening session.

The conference on “Complementarity of Man and Woman,” which has been in preparation for the past year, will feature an international array of speakers including Archbishop Charles Chaput of Philadelphia; Lord Jonathan Sacks, the former chief Rabbi of Britain; Russell Moore of the Southern Baptist Convention; and megachurch Evangelical pastor Rick Warren. Representatives of the Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, and Hindu traditions will also speak.

The conference, to be held November 17 to 19, is co-sponsored by the several Vatican dicasteries: the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF), the Pontifical Council for Christian Unity, and Pontifical Council for the Family, and the Pontifical council for Inter-Religious Dialogue. Cardinal Gerhard Müller, the prefect of the CDF, was reportedly instrumental in suggesting the conference.
