Philippine bishops’ conference rues death penalty, life imprisonment

October 29, 2014

The Philippine bishops’ Episcopal Commission on Prison Pastoral Care has issued a statement opposing the revival of the death penalty, and the commission’s executive secretary called life imprisonment an “inhuman concept.”

“Taking away the life of someone, whom we have condemned, immobilized and rendered helpless with contraptions of death is a horrible lesson to teach our children, that human life is as disposable as any contraptions and trimmings of postmodern life,” the commission said in its statement on the death penalty.

Sadly, this is right in line with the liberal reaction to any crime - protecting the rights of the perpetrator. Criminals who commit the kinds of crimes who are placed in prison for life have time to turn to God and pray for forgiveness and his victims for the rest of his life. Is this not a worthwhile existence?

Is this article a proxy for the Holy Father having said similar things? In any event, I find it troubling that many bishops seem to live so "up in the clouds" about such a "down to earth" area. Is there no crime so heinous or no criminal so dangerous that a life sentence would be appropriate? Why have our leaders lost the sense ofa punishing criminals? Some cannot or will not be rehabilitated. And some crimes are so unjust life in prison is the only reasonable response.
