Pope highlights ecumenical work of Saints John XXIII, John Paul II

October 24, 2014

Pope Francis received a delegation from the Orientale Lumen Foundation on October 24 as its members made a pilgrimage to Rome and to the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. The pilgrimage was led by Metropolitan Kallistos Ware, an Eastern Orthodox bishop and former Oxford professor.

Authentic ecumenical dialogue, the Pope said, entails “interior renewal” and “seeking a greater fidelity to Christ and to his will.” The Pontiff upheld the examples of Saints John XXIII and John Paul II, whose commitment to Christian unity grew from a “docile listening to the word of the Lord,” expressed in Christ's prayer that “all may be one.”

Pope Francis sought the prayers of the delegation and noted that he, too, would soon go on pilgrimage to the Ecumenical Patriarchate during his upcoming apostolic journey to Turkey.
