Pope reduces territory of Monte Cassino

October 23, 2014

Pope Francis has reduced the area entrusted to the jurisdiction of Territorial Abbey of Monte Cassino and has named Father Donato Ogliari, the abbot of another Italian monastery, as its new abbot.

The abbey, founded by St. Benedict in the early 6th century, was destroyed by Allied bombing in a 1944 battle and rebuilt following World War II.

The territorial abbey previously was entrusted with the care of 53 parishes; these parishes are now entrusted to the Diocese of Sora-Aquino-Pontecorvo, which the Pope has renamed the Diocese of Sora-Cassino-Aquino-Pontecorvo.

The abbey’s territory is now reduced to that of the abbey church, monastery, and immediately surrounding area.
