Vatican's UN envoy repeats support for 2-state solution to Israeli-Palestinian conflict

October 21, 2014

Speaking on October 21 at a UN Security Council session on the Middle East, the Holy See’s permanent representative reiterated the Vatican’s support for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian problem.

Archbishop Bernardito Auza said that the persistent conflict could only be resolved by “the realization of the right of the Palestinians to have their own State, sovereign and independent, and of the right of the Israelis to peace and security.”

Archbishop Auza also called for action to stop “massive violations of international humanitarian law and fundamental human rights” in Syria. He echoed the message of Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican Secretary of State:

As regards the grave violations and abuses committed by the so-called “Islamic State” in Iraq and Syria, the competent organs of the United Nations must act to prevent possible new genocides and to assist the increasing number of refugees.

Yitzhak Rabin (assassinated 1995) was the last Israeli Prime Minister open to the idea of a two-state coexistence

Abp. Auza's statement makes the Vatican look foolish. If there is one thing the U.N. has consistently failed at it is "action' in the interest of world peace.

The 2-state solution sounds great in theory, but the reality is that there is little likelihood an agreement will ever be reached, for 2 reasons: 1) Both want authority over Jerusalem and its holy sites; and 2) the Palestinians have never recognized Israel's right to exist as a nation, and have advocated its destruction. Also, when Palestinians have been given authority over Jewish holy sites in past, they have been desecrated, despite promises to the contrary. Pray for a miracle; it'll take one

How would a two state solution be achieved now? Have you looked at the map of that area? The tiny amounts of land that the Palestinians are on now left with are so separated that it would be impossible to make them into a continuous state.

"...the realization of the right of the Palestinians to have their own State...." How many times did the Arab nations attempt to eradicate the Israelis militarily? How many times did the PLO kill, maim, mutilate and blow things up (like airplanes)? What group killed players at the Munich Olympics? What uncle of Arafat (of PLO fame) was the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem and hired ex-Nazis to help kill Jews? Why didn't the Arab states want to give up some of their land? Rights?
