USCCB urges US government to back Congo’s bishops on constitutional revision

October 21, 2014

The chairman of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee on International Justice and Peace has called upon the Obama administration to oppose the efforts of Joseph Kabila, the president of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, to revise his nation’s constitution so as to allow himself to run for another term.

Noting that the Congolese hierarchy “intends to mobilize the people to oppose a change,” Bishop Richard Pates calls upon President Obama’s special envoy to the region to “explore ways to support Church efforts to ensure that the DRC Government serves the common good.”
