Bishop foresees bankruptcy for Winona diocese after abuse claims

October 08, 2014

Bishop John Quinn of Winona, Minnesota has warned Vatican officials that the diocese will probably be forced into bankruptcy because of sex-abuse suits.

In a March 25 letter, which was among 2,000 pages of documents released by plaintiffs’ attorney Jeffrey Anderson, Bishop Quinn explained that the diocese was facing several claims, “anticipates several more, and anticipates eventually bankruptcy as a result of these lawsuits.” In the letter the bishop complains that lawyers for abuse victims, aided by some media figures, have worked to “defame alleged offenders, foster discredit in church officials, and instill common anger and mistrust toward the universal Church.”

A spokesman for the Winona diocese said that no decision has been made on filing for bankruptcy protection.
