Benedict XVI may join in beatification of Paul VI

October 07, 2014

Pope-emeritus Benedict XVI is not expected to take part in this month’s Synod of Bishops, but may participate in the beatification of Pope Paul VI on October 19, the Vatican’s spokesman has announced.

The schedule for the Synod is “so committing and long” that the retired Pontiff is unlikely to take part, said Father Federico Lombardi, the director of the Vatican press office. He observed, too, that since his retirement Benedict XVI has declined to participate in public discussions, and has “been living a private life in prayer.”

However, the retired Pontiff has joined in liturgical ceremonies, and the Vatican spokesman said that “everybody hopes to see him for Paul VI’s beatification.”
