Pope praises disabled athletes for encouraging others

October 06, 2014

In an October 4 audience with members of the Italian Paralympic Committee, Pope Francis paid tribute to sports as an opportunity for athletes “to recognize themselves as brothers and sisters” and as a way to promote “a culture of inclusion and reject the culture of waste.”

Athletes with disabilities, he continued, offer “a message of encouragement to all those who live in situations similar to yours.”

“In every person there is potential that sometimes we do not imagine,” the Pope added. God the Father “is the first to know this” and “loves us as we are, but makes us grow according to what we can become.”
