Church in Europe should be 'prophetic voice,' help families, Pope tells bishops

October 03, 2014

Pope Francis has challenged the Catholic leaders of Europe to “be a prophetic voice within society, especially where the process of secularization in process throughout the European continent tends to make it increasingly marginal to speak about God.”

On October 3, the Pontiff met with leaders of the Council of European Episcopal conferences. He spoke to them without a prepared text, but later distributed a written statement in which he spoke of the need for an “outbound Church,” reaching out to the world “without fear, without distrust, and with apostolic courage.”

The Pope encouraged the bishops to place a high priority on pastoral care for families, noting that healthy parishes are “families of families.” Support for the family, he said, entails support for the rights of parents to supervise the education of their children.
