Follow example of Abraham, shun terrorism, Niger's bishops say in message to Muslims

October 03, 2014

The bishops of Niger, in a message to Muslims, have lauded the example of Abraham and described terrorists as “usurpers of God’s name.”

Less than 0.2% of the residents of Niger, a predominantly Muslim nation in western Africa, are Catholic.

In their message issued on the occasion of Eid al-Adha (Tabaski), a feast that commemorates the Muslim belief that Abraham was willing to sacrifice Ishmael, the bishops said that the recognition of Abraham as a model for believers is a “common sap” that produces “fruits of tolerance and mutual respect.”

The bishops called upon terrorists, “usurpers of God’s name,” to put away their weapons and instead, like Abraham, offer a sacrifice that is pleasing to God.

Unfortunately most Muslims follow the example of Mohammed, not Abraham. The terrorists are indeed usurpers of God's name, but they are firmly on a course first set by Mohammed. Even a cursory knowledge of the man's life makes this evident for all but those who stubbornly refuse to see it.
