Funeral company files $250M suit against archdiocese

October 01, 2014

Alleging breach of contract, a funeral-home company has filed a $250-million lawsuit against the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

In 1997, the archdiocese granted a 40-year lease to S.E. Funeral Homes to offer funeral services at six cemeteries. Following the merger of the funeral homes’ parent company with another corporation, the archdiocese ended the lease.

Defending the archdiocese’s action, a spokeswoman told the Associated Press that the 1997 leases “prohibit the transfer or entrustment of operations without the prior written consent of the archdiocese.”
