Remarriage is not focus of Synod, Italian cardinal insists

September 23, 2014

Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco has said that media reports are "grossly misleading" when they suggest that the questions of divorce and remarriage will dominate the discussions of the October meeting of the Synod of Bishops.

Cardinal Bagnasco made that comment as he addressed a meeting of the Italian bishops' conference, of which he is the president. He disclosed that he will remain as president through 2017, when he will conclude a 5-year term. The next president of the Italian bishops' conference will be chosen under a new procedure, in which the conference submits a slate of candidates from which the Pope will select the new leader.
