Lativan leader visits Pope, talks on European Council, crisis in Ukraine

September 22, 2014

Pope Francis met on September 20 with Latvia’s President Andris Berzins, for discussions that centered on Church-state relations and on the contributions of the Catholic Church to education and social welfare in Latvia.

A brief Vatican statement released after the meeting indicated that the conversation had also touched on Latvia’s term holding the rotating presidency of the European Council: a term that will begin on January 1, 2015. The Pope also spoke with the Latvian leader about the political crisis in Ukraine.
