Human trafficking brings shame on southeast Asia, says Myanmar archbishop

September 19, 2014

Archbishop Charles Bo of Yangon, Myanmar has issued a letter denouncing human trafficking and challenging the country’s government to stop the outrage, the AsiaNews service reports.

The archbishop says that human trafficking puts many people in a “virtual hell,” and notes that the practice is particularly prevalent in southeast Asia. The fact that profiteers exploit the “poorest and most vulnerable” people is a disgrace to the region, he said.

Archbishop Bo said that human trafficking is pursued by “drug barons, who cynically manipulate governments,” and charged that political leaders have been complicit in the crime.
