Scottish bishops react to referendum

September 19, 2014

Following the decision of the voters of Scotland to remain part of the United Kingdom, the Scottish bishops issued a statement saying that their conference "recognizes and respects the result of the Scottish referendum... and commends all those who participated in what was a was a passionate and sometimes partisan debate."

Bishop John Keenan of Paisley told Vatican Radio that “the churches will be involved obviously in encouraging people to move on, to accept the decision, to accept each other and move for a better Scotland.”

“We are most Scottish when we reach out in fraternity and brotherhood across borders and across divides, and I think that’s what eventually won the hearts of the Scottish people,” he added.

In their formal statement the Scottish bishops "urge the Catholic community to continue to engage in public debate and decision-making and, in doing so, to uphold the meaning and importance of the Christian message. May God bless Scotland.”
